Sutton County was formed from Crockett in 1887 and organized in 1890. It is named after Confederate Colonel John S. Sutton, a member of the Santa Fe expedition, a Texas Ranger, a Mexican War soldier, and a Mounted Volunteers colonel. Its county seat is Sonora.
Charles Adams was the first settler, and Sonora was named after his servant from Sonora, Mexico. Adams couldn't pronounce the gentleman's name, so he referred to him as Sonora.
The $26,000 courthouse, completed in 1891, is still in use.
As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,372.
