Pecos County was established by the Texas Legislature in 1871, originally out of Presidio County.
The county seat is Fort Stockton.
Sometimes called “Crossroads,” Pecos has been a crossroad over land transportation lines for many years. Its origins began because of its strategic location. Many old cattle and wagon trails crossed here, including the Butterfield Route, Chisholm Trail, and Loving-Goodnight Trail.
As of the 2020 census, its population was 15,193.
