Coleman County was formed in 1858 from parts of Brown and Travis counties. The county was named for Robert M. Coleman, a Texas Declaration of Independence signer and an aide to General Houston at San Jacinto.
In 1917, oil was discovered on the J.P. Morris Ranch. By 1948, the oil fields produced more than one million barrels annually.
As of the 2020 census, its population was 7,684.
