Connecting the south side of the Concho River with the downtown area on the north side is a pedestrian-only bridge, the first project of El Paseo de Santa Angela. Celebration Bridge was completed and dedicated on July 4, 1993. Close to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the bridge curves across the river with messages in stones purchased by hundreds of local citizens.
Its multilevel concrete columns offer places to sit and ample opportunity for kids to play. The bridge even has built-in games, such as checkers, tick-tack-toe, and hopscotch. Fishing is allowed.
At the foot of the bridge in the river is a bronze statue, The Pearl of the Conchos, an enlargement of Jayne Charless Beck's original sculpture. The bronze is a mermaid offering a Concho Pearl as a gesture of welcome to the city. The Concho Pearl, a freshwater mussel species found in the area, produces lustrous pearls in many colors, famous since the time of the Spanish conquistadors.
