9/11 Memorial
The 9/11 monument is unusual because it was the first September 11 monument built in Texas incorporating a piece of steel from ground zero in New York City. Bishop Emeritus Michael Pfeifer was vital in establishing the memorial. He received the steel fragment from the archbishop of New York City.
It later was vandalized, and that piece of steel was stolen. But in 2017, Rosendo “Rosey” Velez, a September 11 first responder, contributed a steel artifact from the World Trade Center to repair the monument.
Located near Celebration Bridge on the Concho River and below the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.
